Its taken a long time to get the "H" back were it belongs. Historically it should never have been removed. The decision is the est thing that has happened in a long time.

Correct me if I am wrong, Terry, but before the White man appeared here... the maori had no written language... in fact, the Maori version of the their language was written by a white man... right?Huh?

So, Wanganui is the correct spelling, because the white man said so.

Lets hope the white Minister in charge of the final decision makes the right, and white... decision.

Hey, maybe Pita Sharples can do something about that if ONLY we would stop trying to by the Rugby World Cup TV rights for the TV station the tax payer funds... and he is trying to buy the rights with tax payer money....

BTW... I'm hoping for a white Christmas this year....

Maybe the next word they will want to change is the K in KFC.... change it to Maori Fried Chicken....

Wanganui rules orright.

(I wonder if I'll get a bite.....)  Smiley

The bait was there but the snapper didn't take it in this instance. However this snapper might take the bait AND the fisherman. So the fisherman should be careful

Give it your best shot, you old fart!  Grin

The point I was making was that before the white man, the Maori had no written language.... so even though is should have been spelt with an H, it wasn't, meaning it was right to begin with, the people named it Wanganui and so it should remain, because, if the H is silent, what harm does it do? Even if you had called it Wanganui or Whanganui since the year dot, the ONLY problem was when someone gave you the written language, and that is when it became a problem...

But because we gave you that written language, you have to accept the current spelling.... its either that, or invent your own language and have it adopted and .... well, even then, its too late.....

Had you given yourselves a written language before the whites arrived.... I might agree that you have a point.....

But.....

Hey.... if they DO act stupidly, and rename it with an H, then I shall demand Ken Mair change his name to Ken Mare. It sounds more Maorish that way.

You must agree with that THerry.

Wot you you think BrHyn?

I hope John KHey agrees.

I know Michael LHaws does.

Oh dear!! You are showing your bias. Only a white man could talk like that! Never mind we can even tolerate the Dutch. We had to help them out cause otherwise their land would sink. I am not sure what they have contributed to the indigeous people of Aotearoa. I say that kindly and with a great deal of compassion, because they cant spell. There isnt an 'h' in Dutch is there.

Bias?Huh??

I never used the words "brown mother f**kers" did I???

Maybe the Maori should look in the mirror when looking for racists rather than pointing the finger at anyone else....

There is a reason for the confusion. The spelling of W(h)anganui varies with where you are. Wou see the brown brothers do not all speak the same dialect, bit like England! The Wh variant applies only to the upper reaches of the river. The township and lower river is Wa.

I for one have set auto correct in Word to attend to any aberations in spelling!
